Fund 650 New Units of Supportive Housing in
2008!
Why Supportive Housing Works:
Supportive housing is permanent, independent and affordable housing combined
with on-site or visiting case management and support and employment services.
Who benefits from supportive housing?
- Families and individuals are able
to live in affordable housing in the community with access to support services
that help them manage disabilities such as psychiatric disabilities, chemical
addictions, and/or HIV/AIDS.
- 210 of the newly funded units will be for families
- 440 of the newly funded units will be for single adults
- Connecticut’s cities and regions are implementing Ten Year Plans to End
Homelessness that include hundreds of supportive
housing units as a solution – supportive housing results in improved quality
of life and stronger communities.
- The State of Connecticut realizes cost savings by avoiding high cost
institutionalization and emergency care.
- Neighborhoods in cities where supportive housing exists have experienced
increased property values as a result of the investments made in supportive
housing.
What state investment in 2008 is necessary to create 650 new units?
- DMHAS – $4 million to provide support services for single adults.
- DSS – $2.24 million to provide support services for families and $4.95
million for Rental Assistance Program (RAP) certificates for single adults and
families.
- State Treasurer – $6 million to provide debt service for 501c3 bonds for
capital investments required for substantial rehabilitation or new
construction of housing.
The Governor's proposed budget makes an important effort by annualizing funding
to finance 150 new units of supportive housing.
Email your legislators today, urging them to support funding for 650 new
units in 2008. These new units will create permanent new homes for both families
and individuals who would otherwise be homeless!
